Edmund Rice College & Our Lady Of Mercy team up for Drama!

Edmund Rice College and Our Lady Of Mercy Girls’ School have teamed up to deliver the AS and A2 Level Drama & Theatre Studies qualification provided by the AQA exam board.

As this is the first year of the two school’s running an academic programme together it is very much an infancy initiative, but after the student’s sitting exams and progressing in both their written and practical skills required with Drama & Theatre Studies it has proven to be a massive success.

The course structure involves a block priod of time, 1 & ½ hour period, three times a week at Our Lady Of Mercy School. Two of these periods for practical work and the third for the theory part of the subject. The group will present their ongoing production of ‘Undermilk Wood’ for external moderation in late May of this year, we wish them all the best of luck. Keep up the hard work!

Year 8 Hurling

This year has been very successful for the year eight hurling team at Edmund Rice College.

The year started off with mixed results treading the boards from wins against St Patrick’s Bearnageeha and with a narrow defeat from St Malachy’s College. These games seemed to have improved the boys’ skills.

In June of last year the boys competed in the Ulster Colleges Blitz competition. The Edmund Rice College boys competed in the ‘C competition’ and came out victorious after defeating St Patrick’s in a thrilling final.

All of the 15 players gave 100% with outstanding performances from Michael Mc Givern, Adam Loughran, Joseph Maskey and Jamie White.

In addition to their winning performance this year, Joseph Maskey was awarded a Year 8 College All Star award for his skills in hurling. Well done Joseph, keep it up!

Edmund Rice College was privileged to host a question and answer session with representatives of the four main Christian churches in the Glengormley and Carnmoney area. Year 13 students asked probing questions ranging in topics from the eleven plus and transfer procedure to celibacy and the ordination of women. Pupils were keen to learn of existing local projects that aim at greater Christian unity and the impetus that lead to these. Each of the Church representatives spoke of personal experiences in this area and emphasised the areas of unity between the Christian churches and of their aim to help bring respect and understanding. Students were enthusiastic in both their welcome and participation in the event. At the end spontaneous applause by the students demonstrated how much they enjoyed and appreciated this event. We look forward to seeing each of the representatives again within the school where they will be warmly welcomed.

Late Show by Edmund Rice Seals Win

Glengormleys Edmund Rice College fought back from an eight-point deficit to break Coláiste Feirste hearts and take home the silverware from this colleges final at Casement Park.

The Falls Road college, one of the rising names in Ulster Colleges competition, led 3-5 to 1-3 with 20 minutes remaining, but a blistering haul of 3-4 in the closing period ensured Edmund Rice College would be celebrating at the final whistle.

Coláiste Feirste were on top in the opening period, stoking over two early scores, but Hightown, despite their lack of early possession, did manage to strike the post through John Donnelly.

Hightown’s Kevin McLaughlin then smashed a shot off the bar and into the net for the first goal of the match after 15 minutes.

But Coláiste Feirste came roaring back, with scores from two North Belfast Gaels, firstly Padraig Mac Riabhaigh pointed and then Dillon Mac Fhirbhisigh won a high ball and poked it to the net past the Hightown goalkeeper.

The momentum was now with Coláiste Feirste and a great left footed effort into the square by Lochlann Mac Cuardaigh was skewed over his own bar by a Hightown defender. But Martin Murray, the Edmund Rice midfielder, scored his second point with a free in the dying seconds of the half to leave two between the sides.

Telling positional switches for Edmund Rice saw Pearse Connor come on for Niall Southam at full-forward and Brian Gormley moving to midfield with Sean McKee going to wing forward.

Murray, just like in the first half, opened the scoring with a superb point, but Coláiste Feirste then hit something of a purple patch.

Garaí Ó Lionnáin scored a fine point before Ciaran Ó Flionn hit the back of the net with a neat turn and powerful shot that went in off the bar.

Hightown were reeling and were dealt with what seemed a fatal blow seconds later when Mac Cuardaign fired another left footed ball towards the square and Mac Fhirbhisigh once again was on hand to flick the ball into the net.

The Edmund Rice half-backs Caolan Foster, Martin Hackett and captain Ronan McCafferty worked like Trojans to quell Coláiste Feirste’s attacks and begin their own, while the full back line put their bodies on the line for the cause.

Eight points down but inspired by midfielder Murray the North Belfast lads fired over two points before having a goal denied by a fine, close range save from Coláiste Feirste keeper Breandán Ó Neill.

But Hightown wouldn’t have long to wait for a goal as Murray fizzed a ball into John Donnelly, who fired to the back of the net to leave a goal between the sides with 15 minutes left to play.

John Donnelly thought he had scored the equalising goal when he slid in at the far post but the ball was somehow clawed off the line with the cost of a close line free, which Murray duly converted.

Another Murray free, struck right between the posts from out on the left, put the minimum between the sides.

Amazingly, another goal arrived when John Donnelly again found the net when he sliced home a loose ball in the square to break Coláiste Feirste hearts and before the final whistle Donnelly punched a high ball to the net to make it 4-7 to 3-6. The final whistle sparked mass celebrations from the Edmund Rice College players and supporters.

Edmund Rice College held a fitness day for our Key Stage 3 pupils. Encouraging pupils to become healthy has been a priority of the school. The pupils received motivation and advice to become healthy and to get active.

Dr Eamon Pheonix recognises high achievements of ERC boys.

The chairperson of the Edmund Rice Schools Trust, Dr Eamon Pheonix, was the guest speaker at our annual Prizegiving. He complimented the boys on their excellent exam results. He praised the GCSE boys who broke all previous records with 62% of them achieving between 5 and 9 GCSE grades A*-C and the A level boys with 95% of them achieving 2 to 3 A level grades A-E. He commended the staff for their dedication and the high standards reached, very much in keeping with our predecessors in Hardinge Street.

Zambia 2009

The schools Zambia Immersion Project

In March 09 six students, two past pupil and three teachers undertook the schools third Immersion project in Livingstone Zambia.
The students have been fundraising to bring money out to the area to give to the Christian Brother and Sisters who work on a daily basis with the poor in Livingstone. The money will be used for AIDS medication, school resources, including teachers wages and food for the students. Alongside this money was given to the children’s orphanages in which the students worked.
Whilst in Zambia the students worked in local compound schools teaching basic numeracy and literacy, help the nuns with their heavy loads and attend day care centres for those living in the shanty towns, alongside spending time in the orphanages.

In order to raise the money we have been working hard fundraising through different methods. We have to date completed four bag packs, one parish collection in Ardoyne raised over £1720 while another in St. Marys on the Hill rasied over £5,000. Other parishes in North Belfast were equally generous and to all we extend our genuine appreciation. In addition we organised a night at the races and a Christmas Bazaar, not forgetting our St Vincent de Paul conference who helped in arranging a school Halloween disco which made over £900.
Our target was £40,000 to bring out this year and every little helps. In the end we raised over £43,000 which has helped improve the lives of those in Zambia.

Year 9 Hurling

The Yr 9 Hurlers of Edmund Rice College have qualified for the B grade Ulster Colleges Hurling thanks to an excellent display at this years Ulster Colleges blitz at Woodlands GAA pitches in West Belfast in which they finished 3rd. Last years Yr 8 Ulster champions were up against stiff opposition throughout the day and relied on a spirited team effort to carry them through. The ERC outfit began the day in sparkling form after a comfortable win over Corpus Christi College 2-2 to 0-1 with both goals coming from St Enda’s forward Michael Cassidy. It was his club mate Michael McGivern who shone in defence throughout the day with an impressive and solid display. The Hightown Gaels had to endure defeat against Armagh’s St Pauls’s Beesbrook 1-3 to 0-2 before they got back to winning ways with victories over St Colm’s and Aquinas. They enter the higher grade of Ulster Colleges hurling this year and will face teams such as St Colmans Newry, Our Lady and St Pats Knock and St Louis Ballymena. With the like of McGiver, Cassidy and last years Antrim All Star playing well for the Glengormley school, they can enter the competition full of confidence.
