ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIP

Mallusk playing fields was the venue for the first year of the Ulster C Hurling blitz competition on Friday last. The competing teams included Edmund Rice College, St Colm’s Derry, St Michael’s Enniskillen, Abbey CBS Newry, St Eunan’s Letterkenny and Carrickmacross Monaghan. After playing throughout the day, the final was decided between St Michael’s Enniskillen and Edmund Rice College.  Edmund Rice got off to a flying start with an excellent goal directly from a free from Edmund Rice joint Captain Brendan McGivern who hurls for local club St Enda’s. Brendan drilled the sliotar all of around 40 yards to the roof of the net.  A quick goal from Paul Donnelly two minutes later meant that Edmund Rice were all but out of sight. The final score was 2-7 to 0-2. Outstanding performers from Hightown included Joint Captains Brendan McGivern and full back Paul Baker (Ardoyne Kickhams) Kieran Devlin (St Enda’s) and Mícheal Magill (Ardoyne Kickhams).  Hightown now qualify for the higher graded Kirk Cup which begins in February.

YEAR 8

The Year 8 footballers of Edmund Rice College will face St Mary’s Glen Road in the first year football final at Casement Park after the February mid-term.  It has been an exciting contest so far for the boys from the Hightown Road with some excellent victories on the path to the final.  After winning all their games in the league stages against teams which included teams such as Rathmore, the team progressed to the knock out stages of the competition.  After defeating St Patrick’s Lisburn 3-8 to 1-3, they faced a tough quarter final tie against St Louis Ballymena yet came through with a 3-11 to 1-6 victory.  The semi-final was a local affair and St Malachy’s were believed to be favourites, however Hightown produced an emphatic display to reach the final by overcoming St Mac’s 7-12 to 1-2.
