History Makers

15th Nov 2017

Edmund Rice College competed for the first time in a Ladies Gaelic Football event. The Year 8 girls travelled to Magherafelt, County Derry, with Mr Fleming, to play in an Ulster Council LGFA Blitz. The Hightown girls played games against St Marys Magherafelt, St Pius X Magherafelt, Holy Trinity Cookstown and St Ronan’s, Lurgan.

For all of the girls it was their first experience playing in a competitive game situation and they acquitted themselves admirably in all their games. It was pleasing to see the improvement in performance in each of their games.

The final game of a series of five resulted in a victory for the Hightown girls as they had a win against a St Ronan’s Lurgan selection. Niamh Brady made history as the first girl to score for Edmund Rice College in a Gaelic match. Other scorers during the event were Luiseach Sheppard and Charlie O’Hanlon Wilson, who scored 3 goals and 1 point in one game.

Congratulations to the girls. You are history makers. There can only ever be one first team to represent the school in girls Gaelic football.
