Primary 7 pupils show off their Technology skills

8th Oct 2013

The Technology and Design Department have successfully built upon their links with local Primary Schools.

Each Wednesday a number of Primary 7 pupils visit Edmund Rice College Technology and Design Department to get a ‘taster’ of Technology and Design in the post-primary school setting while at the same time acquiring the experience of ICT.

This scheme offers pupils an opportunity to see and use CNC (Computer Numerical Control) routers in manufacturing name plates. This includes the initial computer based programming tasks as well as then having the routers producing the finished designs. This, so far, has been a very successful scheme as it allows the Primary 7 pupils to observe and experience Technology and Design in practice and how it links so successfully with ICT. This is something that they would be unable to do in their own Primary School setting due to lack of expertise and resources in this area.

It consequently also enables the Primary 7 pupils to link Technology and Design to ‘real-life’ experiences and how it can be profitably used in the workplace. Each pupil then leaves with their own, individualised name plate which allows them to have a very important and beneficial memento of their experience.
