History at Edmund Rice is an ever popular subject. All students in Years 8 – 10 have the opportunity to study History for 4 thirty minute periods. The History Department is accommodated in a modern suite of classrooms using the most up to date educational technology.

KEY STAGE 3 HISTORY:

GCSE HISTORY:
Currently 47 Year 12 students are studying GCSE History. At Edmund Rice College we follow the CCEA syllabus. Year 11 and 12 students study History for 5 thirty minute periods each week. The results at GCSE level reflect the enthusiasm and enjoyment the students have for GCSE History.

• Northern Ireland 1965 – 1985
• Course work module – Life in the Warsaw Ghetto

A LEVEL HISTORY:
In September 2003 the History Department introduced AS History to Edmund Rice College. The first group of A Level Historians sat their external exam in June 2004. Year 13 and 14 students study History for 9 thirty minute periods each week.
A Level History results have been consistently excellent with students achieving 100% in  modular examinations and both AS and A Level.
Modules studied at AS and A2 Level include:
• Weimar and Nazi Germany
• Fascist Italy
• Soviet Russia
• Causes of World War 2
• Partition of Ireland
• Nationalism and Unionism in Ireland

HISTORY CLUB:
There are currently 20 members of the History Club. Here students choose to examine their favourite periods of History in a more relaxed atmosphere through the medium of video, internet etc. Several Key Stage 4 students take advantage of History Club to improve examination skills and techniques. Since September members of the History Club have been engaging in Computer Conferencing with students from Mount Lourdes Grammar, Enniskillen. Our group is called Young Historians 2002. HISTORICAL VISITS:
Each year the History Department organises Historical visits so as to allow students to enhance their classroom study of the subject. At present visits include: Carrickfergus Castle in Year 8 and the Ulster History Park, Cultra in Year 9.  The department organises a two day residential trip annually for Year 10 students to the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh and the annual five day trip to Rome and the Vatican City.

History

GCSE History is made up of two written examinations and one piece of coursework. History has always proved an extremely popular subject at GCSE. Past students have achieved consistently excellent grades in GCSE History including A* grades.

Paper 1
This exam lasts 2 hours and gives students the opportunity to study two topics in detail. The topics we study are:
• Weimar and Nazi Germany 1919 – 1939.
This includes the rise of Hitler and life in Nazi Germany
• Northern Ireland 1965 – 1985.
This includes the civil rights movement, Bloody Sunday and the hunger strikers

Paper 2
This exam lasts 1½ hours and tests students outline understanding of Superpower Rivalry. This includes events such as the Berlin blockade, Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War.

Coursework:
Students must complete one piece of coursework. This is completed in class and is based on ‘Life in the Warsaw Ghetto’ a topic which is covered in Paper 1.

Career Opportunities:
History is a traditional academic subject which is recognised by a wide range of universities and is useful for a wide range of careers. In particular students who have studied History have pursued careers in:
